Originally by: Stephar Joe Alliance can mine truckloads of mercoxit, he can claim the bounties of thousands of rat battleships, he can earns tons of LP's running level 4 missions in 0.0 space, he can be part of an alliance which controls hundreds of solar systems, he can network and find a slot in a group that farms 10/10 complexes, he can become a seasoned pvp'er and align himself with similarly-skilled pilots and fly around ganking noobs...
But if he gets podded once, he'll earn fewer skillpoints than Joe Empire. And that's the main reason I'm still in empire. I've got a moderate amount of ISK, but can't fly anything that costs more than pocket change. I could venture off to 0.0, maybe make more ISK than I do today... but why would I when I don't have the skillpoints to use that ISK? It's possible to jump in a battleship within a couple of months, but it takes many more to train the necessary supplemental skills to fly a battleship properly. And if we're talking T2 equipment, or even better, T2 ships... well that takes even more skillpoints.
From what I've read on the forums, if your first goal in the game is to fly a battleship, you'd need somewhere in the region of 8 millions SP's to do so adequately. How long does it take to get that many SP's? About 7 months? Isn't it interesting that the average EVE player plays for about 7 months? That means that a good half of the population has a skillpoint deficiency... and the quickest way to remedy that shortcoming is to protect your implants and hump veldspar in empire.
Until CCP makes it so that you can earn skillpoints faster in 0.0 than empire, a lot of folks like myself are going to keep hanging in high security.
Im just going to focus on the battleship part of your post as other people have already talked about the rest a lot.
Battleships dont take a lot of skill to fly anymore, and theyre not needed in 0.0, neither are T2 ships. I went into 0.0 at the age of 2 months, hopped in a battleship at the age of 4 months and killed some low end (500-600k ISK) battleship rats in my first week of owning that ship.
That was back in January and i am still flying the same megathron now, in June, 6 months later. I have only 5.8m SP at the moment, but i make about 20mil per hour ratting in my area and i can take on any normal rat (non officer/dread).
Also.. if you live in 0.0, you will make enough money to replace the implants if you do die and you can just change clones using a jump clone if you ever have to go to war.

Now someone in here described 0.0 as a fun hellish area (lol). I really think empire is the hell of EVE. In one area you have sentry tanking gate snipers, then you have the laggy ass system, then the n00b greifers, then the occasional local spamming corp recruiters, then those anoyying ass macroers, then the boring as hell repetitve missions, and finally, all of the complexes and rats have been killed so many times already, you can barely find anything.
The only thing empire is good for, is when you cant spend more than 10 minutes online. ---------------- Meet... bunneh:
